A mother of vinegar is used to ferment an already alcoholic beverage into vinegar. Alcohol is fermented by bacteria known as 'Acetobacter' into acetic acid, the tangy, acidic flavour found in vinegar.

This mother is for brewing red wine vinegar, and as such is a 'mother' suspended in a solution of raw red wine vinegar with a 5% concentration of acetic acid.
