The HERMS method (standing for Heat Exchange Recirculating Mash System) is a popular choice for more experienced homebrewers. As the name suggests, this method involves recirculating the mash through a coiled heat exchanger located in the Hot Liquor Tank.
The advantages of this method are plentiful; it ensures consistent temperature throughout the mash schedule, eliminates the risk of wort scorching, and reduces enzyme denaturation. Ultimately, HERMS allows for a more efficient, flexible, and predictable mashing program.
Works best with a compression fitting, such as the 1/2" Male NPT to 1/2" Compression fitting thru a 7/8" hole.
