Pear is a common ingredient when making ciders, but certain beer styles can also benefit by incorporating this fruit's peculiar flavour.

It can add complexity and help accentuate the malt character in hop-forward IPAs, and Pale Ales or amplify the fruity character of ester-forward beers like Blonde Ale, Hefeweizen, Witbier, Belgian Ale, and many others. Brewing beer with pear might seem to be an easy task, but that’s a common mistake many novice homebrewers make.

Due to the dense pulp with lots of starch in it, pears can give off a wide range of by-products that will seriously affect the beer's final taste after fermentation. And if you want to get that distinct taste of ripe autumn pears, it’s best to go with an all-natural flavouring.

Usage: Add 1 oz per gallon and sample, adding more until you reach the taste you want.
