Smoked with peat moss, this malt is great for for use in Scotch Ales, or Peat Smoked Porters. A little goes a long way! Adds an intense smokey phenol character. Peat malt is used in the distilling of the finest whiskies of Scotland, but has also found itself as an interesting ingredient choice by many homebrewers and craft brewers.
The distinct phenolic character of many authentic Scotch whiskey brands is derived from using Peated Malt by Thomas Fawcett. It is a light coloured base malt that is dried using peat smoke, which is a traditional method for making malt in Scotland. As a result, the malt imparts a very light colour and imbues the beer with a very pronounced seaweed smoke flavour and aroma, which has become very popular with experimental craft brewers. Though, Thomas Fawcett Peated Malt can be used as a base malt, take note that its smoked character is very potent even compared to traditional smoke malts, so a lower amount may be required to achieve the desired results.
