Use a foam stopper to plug your flask when making a yeast starter. As opposed to a rubber stopper and airlock, a foam stopper allows airflow in and out of the flask while still preventing bacteria, mold, and wild yeasts from entering the flask. Allowing airflow lets your yeast starter get the oxygen it needs while still letting CO2 out, unlike an airlock, which only lets gasses out.
