Prior to the existence of muslin bags, brewers relied on cheese cloth to enclose hops or grains within the brewing vessel.

To utilize cheese cloth, simply place your hops onto it, fold the cloth around them, and secure it with a string. However, the muslin bag now serves primarily to separate sediment during various phases of the brewing process.
